TRAVEMUENDE, GERMANY-(26-7-2005) The 116th Travemuende Week saw the Contender Worlds starting on Tuesday (26
July) with three races after they have failed due to three general recalls
on their opening day before. And it was the German hero Jan von der Bank
from Kiel leading the strong pack of 106 competitors after day one. He set a
bullet in the first race and was clever enough to defend the top against the
whole world elite chasing him. Second and third in the leader board are
British sailors Graham Scott and Tim Holden 11 and 14 points behind whilst
title defender Andrea Bonezzi from Italy is fourth another point behind.
`I had a nice pin end start in the first race when it was pretty much clear
that this end would have an advantage`, explained von der Bank. He lead the
fleet from the start to the finish almost doubtless. Top favourite Marcus
Hamilton from Australia had a worst start coming in 27th but recovered
quickly scoring a first and a second in the next races. `If the wind stays
light there is a good chance to beat them. But in stable conditions the
Worlds will be a match race between Andrea and Marcus`, predicted the early
leader.
The first ever so-called final races seeing the best six of the class in
close races near the beach missed some breeze on Tuesday. Only the 49ers
fulfilled the schedule with double German victory of Thomas Rein/Patrick
Boehmer and brothers Martin and Oliver Lewin. Austrian former Olympic
Windsurfing Champion Christoph Sieber and his crew Clemens Kruse finished
third. The Tornados and 29er had no final races with the winners stayed from
the day before; Russian duo Kirilyuk/Ushkov on the catamaran and Germans
Friedhoff/Munding in the skiff.
With some luck at the end world champions Wolfgang Hunger and Holger Jess
from Germany won the international German Championships in the 505 class.
They were disqualified after an infringement with the path finder making up
for the special gate start of the class. `It happens when we were only
concentration on to cover our closest rivals`, said Jess. But
Lehmann/Schöler did not managed to hold their 100 metre lead from the first
windward mark when the wind died at the end. The finished only second
loosing the championships by one point to Hunger/Jess. Bronze went to
Hamlin/Lewis from the USA.
